Tarantula (タランチュラ,   Taranchura) is a Giant Spider Kaiju that appeared in the ninth episode of the 1966 television series, Ultra Q.

Name[]

Tarantula was named after the tarantulas, a family of spiders whose name comes from the Italian town, Taranto.

Design[]

Tarantula, being a large spider of the same name, has a large abdomen, eight long, slender limbs, large chelicerae and two large, glowing eyes.

Origins[]

According to a local legend, Tarantula was originally a baron, who collected different species of spiders. He kept them as pets in his mansion. One day after bringing back a tarantula from a trip to Europe, his daughter fell into the nearby swamp and drowned. This caused the baron to become insane and began to believe that his daughter became a giant spider. He eventually transformed into a large tarantula and continued to live in his mansion, attacking anyone who trespassed.

Abilities[]

Webbing[]

Like normal spiders, Tarantula can make a thick web. As seen in Ultra Q, the whole baron's house is filled with cobwebs, made by Tarantulas.

Weaknesses[]

Tarantula and his fellow giant spiders proved to be no match for fire, with them all being killed once the baron's mansion began to burn down.

Trivia[]

  • The spider webbings were made of hot melted styrofoam, which resulted in the actors who got sprayed by the webs to wear nylon coverings over their heads to prevent being burned.
