Ultraman Z (ウルトラマンZゼット,   Urutoraman Zetto) is a tokusatsu Kyodai Hero television series produced by Tsuburaya Productions. It is the thirty-second entry of the Ultraman Series and celebrates the 10th anniversary of Ultraman Zero.[1][2] The series ran on TV Tokyo from June 20, 2020 to December 26, 2020.

Ultraman Z & Zero Voice Drama (ウルトラマンゼット&ゼロボイスドラマ,   Urutoraman Zetto & Zero Boisu Dorama) is a voice narrated series of short episodes featuring Ultraman Z and Ultraman Zero. Each episode was released on Tsuburaya Productions' official YouTube channel to coincide with the airing of an Ultraman Z episode.[3]

Ultraman Z Throwback Program[]

During the run of Ultraman Z, episodes from past series were streamed on YouTube every Monday. Each streamed episode is related to the week’s Ultraman Z episode. It is also known as the Special Ultra 2020 Project.[4]

Ultraman Z was immediately announced on the official website of Tsuburaya Productions in March 26, 2020.[1][2] On April 16, the first trailer was released alongside new forms for Ultraman Z and Ultraman Geed and the transformation items being revealed on the official website.[5][6] The site additionally announced Kiyotaka Taguchi as its main director, Tatsuomi Hamada's return as the show's supporting cast and finally Masaaki Endoh and Nami Tamaki singing the opening and ending themes respectively. The entire cast of the STORAGE and GAF members appeared in a live broadcast on June 5, 2020.[7]

Reception[]

Ultraman Z was exceedingly popular amongst fans and critics, with Nerdist listing the series in their list of the best shows of the year.[8][9] Shortly after the series' twenty-fifth episode aired, "#UltramanZ50Episodes" was trending in Japan.[10] On February 6, 2021, Ultraman Z was announced for a rerun internationally and exclusively on the Ultraman Official YouTube Channel due to the positive reception of the series.[11][12]

Trivia[]

  • In the early drafts of Ultraman R/B, it was originally going to be called Ultraman Z and would have marked the end of the Heisei Series.
  • In Ultraman Z, classic monsters that have not appeared in a mainline series since Showa era include: Gomess (small class), Peguila, Kanegon, M1, Guigass, and Baraba, with the last three appearing for the fist time in almost fifty years.
